A Youth Challenge on Combating Desertification and Mitigating Drought in the Arab Region

Win the challenge and we will invite you to celebrate with us the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on the 17th of June 2022, at the UN House in Beirut! For this event, representatives of Arab countries, regional organizations, academia, and key actors are invited to join youth to shed light on the alarming issue of desertification and drought. Winners of the challenge will also be praised during the event and will be provided an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns.

Your challenge is to produce a short video that documents a solution to either desertification or drought, explaining -to the extent possible- its impact on the environment, ecosystems, agriculture, local economy, and human lives.

If you choose to tackle desertification, the video must showcase the process, practice, technique, or technology used to help prevent, reduce, or reverse land degradation in the Arab region. The video needs to document how the strategy or process works on the ground, and how it impacts environment, ecosystems, and/or human lives.

If you are more concerned about drought and have an effective solution to document, your video must cover how a strategy, practice, technique, or technology has been implemented successfully in the Arab region to mitigate drought and protect people, environment, ecosystems, and economy from its impact.

The video must describe an effective idea that has been put in practice in an Arab country.

Your video must contain the following components:

  • A definition of the problem,
  • Why you think it is important,
  • Relevance to Arab region or other Arab countries where it is applicable,
  • Effectiveness when compared to other potential solutions,
  • How it works,
  • Its impact on ecosystem restoration
  • A call for action

Optional components:

  • Ideas and suggestions on how to make it better, and
  • What would have happened if it was not used in that specific location.

The challenge is to show these aspects in an appealing way to engage youth to initiate and advocate for proper solutions to desertification and drought and promote better practices. It should help youth become more acquainted with the concepts of desertification and drought, depict their negative implications, and get introduced to successful solutions.
