Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Wins Third Place in the Best Graduation Projects Competition at Cairo Water Week 2025

In a new achievement added to the record of the Faculty of Agriculture – Mansoura University, the graduation project “Robot for Irrigation of Green Spaces”, one of the senior projects by students of the Department of Agricultural Engineering – Field Irrigation and Drainage Engineering specialization, won third place in the Best Graduation Projects Competition among Egyptian universities.

The competition was held as part of the 8th edition of Cairo Water Week 2025, under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Water Resources,” and was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

The results were announced during the competition’s closing session, which witnessed strong participation from Egyptian universities, in the presence of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.

The project aims to develop a prototype of a smart robot capable of autonomously and efficiently irrigating green spaces and public gardens using modern Internet-based control technologies. The system contributes to water conservation, reduces reliance on manual labor, and lowers operating costs compared to traditional irrigation systems.

The robot operates via an electronic control unit connected to a smart interface that allows users to define irrigation zones and accurately determine the required water quantities. It moves using electric motors and irrigates through rotary sprinklers connected to a direct water source or independent tanks. It is also equipped with obstacle-avoidance sensors, a GPS unit, and a rechargeable lithium battery, enabling it to perform its tasks independently.

The project team included Eng. Moamen Magdy, Eng. Abdelrahman Elsaban, and Eng. Yehia Elmorsy, along with team members Eng. Mai El-Metwally, Eng. Mona Mohamed, Eng. Mona Mahmoud, Eng. Nora Galal, and Eng. Mona Nasser, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Maher Mohamed Ibrahim.

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ali Shata, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture – Mansoura University, extended his sincere congratulations to the winning team, praising their outstanding efforts and innovative ideas. He affirmed that this achievement reflects the excellence of the faculty’s students and their leadership in applying knowledge to serve sustainable development and address environmental and climate challenges.

This project represents a successful model of integrating smart agriculture with modern digital technologies, highlighting the students’ ability to implement practical and applicable ideas across various fields such as public and private gardens, villas, playgrounds, schools, and small farms — demonstrating the convergence of science, creativity, and practical innovation.
